W1 were approached by WH Smiths to carry out an independent review of their refrigerated 'estate' and to develop a strategic plan for future purchasing and maintenance contracts. Analysis of planned and reactive maintenance costs, reviews of existing equipment and meetings with store and support personnel were undertaken. We were able to identify systemic shortcomings which exacerbated the equipment failures, in turn leading to lost revenues. Reporting to Group Board Level we made recommendations on equipment selection and use, purchasing and warranty terms, hot swapping, selection of maintenance contractors and contract terms and the implementation of an asset register linked to maintenance costs and sales revenue.
